The Best Scooter Battery Charging Practices

Did you know that proper charging practices can extend the life and charge of a battery? This can be especially important when you use a personal mobility device like a scooter. Here are the best scooter battery charging tips to keep your battery performing at its peak:

Be Patient with the Breaking-In Period

Scooter batteries are used frequently. As such, it’s best for them to be equipped with a deep cycle batteries like those we offer at MK Battery. Gel batteries like our sealed VLRA batteries have improved capacity after a few initial charge and discharge cycles (15-20) so plan for a breaking-in period wherein the charge will gradually get more extended.

With some batteries, they work best if they're fully drained before the first few recharges. However, that’s not the case with our gel and AGM batteries. Carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions for your scooter batteries so that you know what to expect from the first week of use.

Use the Right Charger

Never mix and match different batteries and scooters. It’s especially important that you don’t use two different kinds of batteries at the same time. Always conscientiously follow the recommended batteries for your make and model. Additionally, you should use only the charger provided for your specific battery.

Charge Every Night

This isn’t just for convenience’s sake. It’s also important because it’s the way these batteries are designed to work! Our batteries are supposed to charge for 8 hours each night. It’s also recommended that about once a month, you give the batteries the opportunity for a 12-hour charge. Don’t worry about over-charging. Modern gel and AGM batteries are built to self-regulate their charging, so leaving them plugged in longer than necessary won’t hurt their safety or capacity.

Store Only Charged Batteries

If you don’t use your scooter very often, or you’re planning to store it for a season, remember these tips:

  • Store only fully-charged batteries.
  • Store in an environment safe from extreme highs and lows in temperature.
  • Check the battery’s charge every few months and recharge if necessary.
